Case Study of the Peristyle of the Diocletian's Palace within the international project of the European Union Trainmonher

Croatian Conservation Institute is from the end of 2006 a partner on the project Trainmonher (TRAINing in MONumental HERitage), international project in the FP6 programme (project no. INCO-CT-2006-518697). Full project title is Valorisation of Monumental Heritage through Higher Education and Professional Training, Socioeconomic Study and Analysis of National Policies on EU-MED-DEV Countries and EC Directives.

Project coordinator organization is Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona from Spain and other partners are the following institutions: Université de Versailles Saint Quentin en Yvelines from France, Université Cadi Ayyad from Morocco, Universidad Nacional de Luján from Argentina, Hrvatski restauratorski zavod (Croatian Conservation Institute) from Croatia, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás Hidalgo from Mexico, Instituto Nacional de Engenharia, Tecnologia e Inovaçao from Portugal and Rudjer Boskovic Institute from Croatia.

Trainmonher is a two year international project (2006 - 2008) in the FP6 programme whose object is the implementation of multidisciplinary modules on restoration and valorisation of monumental heritage. After a comparative survey to identify specific needs in education, various theoretical and practical modules are developed for juniors graduated, students, cultural heritage professionals. This programme is available through an e-learning platform. The main objective is to promote and strengthen higher and professional education in developing countries, with the support from EU in the field of cultural heritage (Monuments).

The education courses within the project were performed in Morocco (April, 2008) and in Mexico (June, 2008). The last course was held in Split, Croatia from September 29 to October 3 2008 in the organization of the Croatian Conservation Institute. Through lectures and guided visit of locations in the historical nucleus of Split, Case Study of restoration of the Peristyle of the Diocletian’s Palace, including scientific and restoration researches of the stone and stone restoration techniques, was presented to the students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture and to the students of the Restoration Department of the Arts Academy of the University of Split. The course lectures covered the topics of types of stone, building materials, techniques, styles in architecture, cultural tourism and project management and they were held by the experts from the Croatian Conservation Institute, the University of Split, the Service for the Old City Core, Conservation Department and the experts from partner countries. During the course students had the opportunity to work on the Internet platform which was made by the partners from the University of Luján, Argentina. Besides lectures and work on the educational platform guided visit of several locations in the historical nucleus of Split was also organized with reference to the cultural tourism and architectonic, city planning and restoration problems. Focusing on all these aspects four groups of students prepared at the end of the course excellent and very interesting presentations about chosen locations of the Diocletian’s Palace (Peristyle, substructures of the Palace, etc.).
