A group of exhibitions titled together as Stone as a Building Material was organized by the Ministry of Culture as part the Council of Europe programme - Europe, a Common Heritage 1999-2000, to mark the ten year anniversary of the European Heritage Days.

In 1996, systematic conservation work began on the most endangered areas of the Cathedral in Split, ranging from the conservation of the roof, the cleaning and conservation of stone on the front, the construction consolidation of the Baroque choir, to installing appropriate lighting in the interior of the church and consolidating archaeological sites in the immediate proximity of the cathedral.

The exhibition presented the conservation treatments of two paintings from Zadar, which were carried out in 1995 and 1996 by the Croatian Conservation Institute, then called Institute for the Restoration of Works of Art.
